Truckee River Sanctuary is a high elevation homestead in the heart of the Sierras along the Truckee River near beautiful Lake Tahoe. We offer our home as a place to stay, learn, heal and grow.
Truckee River Sanctuary lies at 6,200 ft in the heart of the Sierra's. We work hard at growing food in our high altitude environment and short growing seasons. We are dedicated to collaborating with the Truckee/Tahoe community to create a more resilient and sustainable food system. We offer a place for children and adults to experience the possibilities of a way of life that is more connected to the cycles of the natural world and our Human Nature.
Utilizing the principles of Permaculture Design and Earth-Based Spirituality, we offer a place for people to learn to GROW.
Currently we have laying hens for eggs production year round and broilers and turkeys for meat production during the summer months. There is a 900 square foot hoop house that allows for 3 season growing and overwintering of vegetables. An apple orchard of nearly 20 trees sits in the front yard. Composting is in constant production utilizing waste stream products from the community and home. Children and Adults visit Truckee River Sanctuary to learn about High Altitude gardening, composting and raising chickens.
Within the ground at TRS, Polly and Don built a Kiva. It is a sacred space for community to come together for ceremony and celebration. They offer men's and women's circles, drum workshops, and frequent gatherings for rituals to honor the seasons. The land in the Tahoe/Truckee region holds a special energy for people to participate with the natural world. Lake Tahoe can truly purify the soul. The lakes, streams and valleys of Truckee can reflect our inner beauty and connection to the world when we take the time to listen. Polly offers Visionary Healing Work in the home and facilitates many of the community gatherings in the Kiva. Don helps people create their own sacred space as a landscaper through his business Native Landscapes
